What is Rinviv?
Rinviv is a theme pack for Vivaldi Web Browser based on Internet Explorer 8, designed for those who are nostalgic for a simpler time that can no longer be experienced after growing up and becoming an adult, created by a member of Gen Z nostalgic for the early days of the internet when Web Gloss 2 (Frutiger Aero) was all the rage and kids spent hours playing games that ran on Adobe Flash Player.
The History of Rinviv
It all started back in 2009 when Microsoft released Windows 7. With its release came the newest version of their widely disliked proprietary web browser Internet Explorer, Internet Explorer 8. While many ignored Internet Explorer and instead downloaded other browsers like Google Chrome and Firefox, some users, who were kids during this time, only had access to Internet Explorer, adding fuel to the nostalgic fire that would eventually ignite when Gen Z reached childhood and began looking back. In 2013, the final version of Internet Explorer, IE11, would release, and in 2015, Microsoft would release a new browser called Microsoft Edge for their new Windows 10 operating system to replace Internet Explorer, which would take its final breath in 2020. In 2023, another Gen Z developer, Travis (who goes by travy_patty) developed Rinfox, a pixel perfect total conversion for Firefox 115 Extended Support Release based off of Internet Explorer 8, which would later be picked up by other developers later. This follows a trend of nostalgia gripping gen Z and late millennials who started reminiscing about life in the 2000s, including the domination of what the Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute would eventually call "Frutiger Aero" and web design from the early to mid 2000s. Mozilla changed the architecture for CSS customizations in future versions of Firefox, causing Rinfox to break on any other version besides 115 ESR. Unfortunately, Firefox 115 ESR will end support in March 2027, meaning that it will become unsafe to use daily, and Rinfox's days are numbered. The Rinviv creator, who had already converted his Windows 11 PC to resemble Windows 7, was inspired when he discovered Vivaldi, a web browser specifically focused around customization and making it yours. On October 13th, 2026, he spent the entire afternoon and a large portion of the evening creating Rinviv so he didn't have to give up those early 2000s IE8 vibes on his PC. And now, he has made it publicly available to those who also have great nostalgia for a time that has sadly come and gone.
The name Rinviv is a combination of the project's roots as a Rinfox inspired project and a project made in Vivaldi. The logo is inspired by Firefox and Internet Explorer
